Who was Joseph Pilates?
Joseph Hubertus Pilates, was born in 1880 Germany and died 1967 New York USA, had a lifelong interest in body-mind conditioning.
As a frail child suffering from asthma & rheumatism he dedicated himself to becoming stronger from the inside out. He began bodybuilding and by the age of 14 was posing for anatomy charts. He later grew to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast & boxer. He also investigated martial arts, yoga and the training techniques adopted by the early Olympians in the Roman-Greco era.
While interned in England during WW1 for his German citizenship Joseph served as a nurse for immobilized patients. During this time he designed exercise apparatus by attaching springs to hospital beds. This system formed the foundation for his style of body conditioning & specialized exercises. Over time, his system of exercise proved to be very beneficial for these patients who all recovered much faster than any of the other hospitalised patients. In addition to this accomplishment, before leaving England Joseph was also responsible for training English Police Officers in hand to hand combat.
In 1926, with a desire to flee war stricken Europe and follow his dream, Joseph travelled to NYC where he opened the first Pilates Studio. Here his Method was especially adopted by professional dancers who found it to be a great way to enhance their physical abilities preventing and overcoming injuries.
Today, the Pilates Method is recognized worldwide as a holistic form of exercise attracting participants from all age groups and all walks of life. Its unique benefits are enjoyed from elite athletes to the everyday individual. Pilates has in particular been helpful to those needing rehabilitation, especially those with back and spinal problems. As a result, Pilates has deservedly developed a worldwide reputation for spinal care.
